Statement of intent
The business aims, so far as is reasonably practicable, to:
- prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health;
- identify and manage significant risks arising from work activities;
- provide and maintain equipment that is suitable for its intended use;
- keep equipment in a safe condition through appropriate checks, maintenance and testing;
- follow applicable health and safety law and reasonable client or venue safety procedures;
- co-operate with clients, venues, contractors and other workers on health and safety matters;
- provide relevant information and instructions to anyone engaged to assist with the work; and
- review working arrangements when activities, equipment, locations or risks change significantly.
Responsibilities
Overall and day-to-day responsibility for health and safety rests with Alexander Baker.
Any assistant, substitute or subcontractor engaged by the business is expected to:
- take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others;
- follow relevant risk controls, venue rules and reasonable instructions;
- use equipment safely and only for its intended purpose;
- report hazards, accidents, near misses and defective equipment promptly; and
- stop and seek advice where work cannot be carried out safely.
Arrangements
Risk assessment and planning
- Relevant hazards will be considered before work starts, taking account of the location, audience, access, equipment, schedule and other contractors.
- Controls will be proportionate to the level of risk and reviewed if conditions change.
- Where a client or venue provides a risk assessment, method statement or site rules, these will be considered alongside the business’s own assessment.
Equipment and electrical safety
- Equipment will be visually checked before use and maintained in line with its condition, use and manufacturer guidance.
- Formal inspection or electrical testing will be arranged where appropriate to the equipment and risk.
- Damaged or suspect equipment will be removed from service until repaired, replaced or confirmed safe.
- Power distribution will not be overloaded, and suitable protection will be used where required.
Set-up, access and public areas
- Cables, cases, stands and equipment will be positioned to reduce trip, impact and obstruction risks.
- Work areas and emergency routes will be kept clear so far as the business can reasonably control them.
- Barriers, cable covers, warning measures or altered routing will be used where the risk justifies them and the venue permits.
- Equipment will be stable, appropriately secured and kept away from liquids, excessive heat and unauthorised interference.
Manual handling and transport
- Loads will be assessed before lifting or moving.
- Trolleys, staged moves, team lifting or venue assistance will be used where reasonably necessary.
- Vehicles will be loaded so that equipment is reasonably secure and does not obstruct safe driving.
Noise, lighting and event conditions
- Sound levels will be managed with regard to the venue, audience, duration and any applicable limits.
- Hearing protection will be used or made available where personal exposure may be significant.
- Lighting, haze, lasers, rigging or effects outside the business’s competence or agreed scope will be left to suitably competent providers.
Working at height
Work at height will be avoided where reasonably practicable. Where it is necessary, suitable access equipment and controls will be used. Furniture, flight cases and other improvised platforms will not be used as access equipment.
Home, office and production work
- Workstations will be arranged to reduce avoidable strain and poor posture.
- Reasonable breaks will be taken during prolonged screen, editing or production work.
- Data, electrical and fire risks associated with home or studio equipment will be managed proportionately.
Emergency procedures and incidents
- Relevant venue emergency, evacuation and first-aid arrangements will be identified where practicable.
- Work will stop where there is an immediate and serious danger.
- Accidents, near misses and equipment failures will be recorded where useful or required, and reportable incidents will be notified to the appropriate authority.
Co-operation and review
The business will raise material safety concerns with the relevant client, venue or contractor and will not knowingly continue work where significant risks remain uncontrolled. This policy and related working arrangements will be reviewed when there is a significant change or a relevant incident.
